WHAT DO WE CELEBRATE?

WYD is a meeting of young people from all over the world with the Pope. It is also a pilgrimage, a festival of youth, an expression of the universal Church and a strong moment of evangelization of the world of youth.

A bit of history

In 1984, Pope John Paul II wanted to organize a meeting on Palm Sunday in Rome to celebrate the Jubilee of Youth. Sixty thousand pilgrims were expected. The call was answered by 250,000 pilgrims from many countries.
The experience was so significant for the whole Church that the Holy Father decided to repeat it the following year. In 1985, John Paul II wrote an Apostolic Letter to the youth of the whole world and announced the institution of World Youth Day.
